Trying, failing, experimenting is the philosophy of the Deutscher Werkbund, uniquely implemented in Germany at the Werkbund Workshop Nuremberg. More relevant than ever?
From hand to perception—the WWN presents its philosophy and work, with representatives from four decades of educational work, complemented by selected exhibits in the gallery displays.
Ideas and experiences emerge with "guidance," in open-ended interaction with materials during the work process. Practical, conscious, and reflective work is applied to shape and transform materials, but also mindsets and perspectives. Potential is discovered and encouraged. A process of experience, development, and insight unfolds.
Since 1986/87, the WWN has been a place of learning where people can experience and discover what the materials ‘do’ and what they themselves ‘do’ with them.
“(...) A joy in playful, sensory and relevant design. Not in spite of, but precisely because of the uncertainties of our times. We do not need to know everything to make a difference (...) It is precisely the unknown that opens up the space to understand the future as freely malleable. This attitude – between confidence and doubt – shapes the creative mode of our time: open to ruptures and contradictions, (...) driven by the will to do things differently.” (mcbw 2026)

Design theory, as understood by the WWN, deals with the inherent properties of material and form and their interactions within the design process.
